Dr. Boulanger received his MS from Iowa State University (1980) and his PhD from the University of Illinois, Champaign (1985). He has worked as a discovery chemist at Abbott Labs (Anti-inflammation) and FMC Corp (Plant Growth Regulators and Insecticides), was instrumental in building the cGMP and Process areas of MediChem (now deCode) along with Albany Molecular Research having also launched the Separations Group at AMRI, and has enjoyed a guest appointment at Argonne National Labs to study the HIV protease. Currently, besides running Obiter Research as its President and founder, Dr. Boulanger is also an adjunct professor at the world-renown UIUC Chemistry Department where he teaches a class in laboratory techniques and Hydrogenation as well as running the Department's High Pressure Facility.

Dr. Boulanger has a broad background of experience in many areas of chemistry, from Physical Organic, Discovery Medicinal, Synthetic and Process Chemistry, and has thousands of new compounds to his credit. More than just a chemist, Dr Boulanger has cultured wild mushrooms, is a machinist, wood-worker, glass-blower, and is currently making violins. He brings his varied background to bear in his chemistry and specializes in technically difficult chemistry, providing unorthodox solutions to chemical syntheses where classic "pot" chemistry fails. Examples are chemical conversions on insoluble compounds, flash vacuum pyrolysis to prepare highly strained bridgehead olefins, and the use of flow reactors to optimize desired products. Dr. Boulanger regularly works within the range of bench-top scale up through 200 L.
